Penmans, began in Paris and produced knitted goods such as socks, undershirts and full set of underwear for about 100 years.

There were 2 factories in Paris, one on the Nith river and one on the Grand.

We have a lot of knitted items, colour samples, etc. as many people in Paris worked in Penmans over the years.

The other thing about it is that in the early days, because it required specific skills, many young women came over from Northern England to work, sponsored by Penmans, so there was an interesting social development of young immigrant women who supported themselves financially.
